There is a moment many new mothers face. It often happens late at night, standing in front of the bathroom mirror, when you look at your reflection and barely recognize the person staring back. The eyes are the same, but the sparkle is dimmed by exhaustion. The body is different, shaped by the miracle of creation. And the self, the YOU that you spent decades building, the ambitious traveller, the spontaneous artist, the focused professional, feels utterly lost under a mountain of tiny socks and demands for “Mama!”
This feeling is incredibly common, yet rarely spoken about. Motherhood is the most profound change a person can go through, and it is completely normal to feel like you have disappeared into the role.
The good news? The woman you were is still there, waiting for you. This is not about finding a completely new self, but simply learning how to rediscover yourself after motherhood by making space for creative healing and intentional self-reclamation.
Before we dive into practices, we must acknowledge the “Invisible Load.” This is the mental work of running a household, anticipating needs, and keeping your family happy and healthy. This load takes away the energy you need to dedicate to your own identity.
When your entire day is defined by immediate needs and reactions, your own long-term dreams and desires get put aside. Recognizing this is the first, most compassionate step. You have not failed; you have simply prioritized. Now, it is time to intentionally shift some of that focus back to you.
We often think self-care requires a weekend getaway or a spa day. For mothers, this fantasy often means never doing it. Creative healing starts small, consistent, and most importantly, protected.
The Exercise: Schedule Your Sovereignty
Consistency, not duration, is the key to successfully starting to rediscover yourself after motherhood. These small acts signal to your brain that your personal identity is still a priority.
When you only hear “Mom” all day, your brain wires itself to respond only to that identity. Identity Mapping helps you reconnect with the multifaceted woman you truly are.
The Exercise: The 10 “I Am” Statements
(If you are seeking deeper, guided work on reclaiming your core values, our 1:1 Support offers frameworks for this mapping process.)
Motherhood often puts us into a state of heightened alert, focusing our senses on safety and management (listening for cries, smelling diapers, scanning for hazards). To heal, we need to intentionally engage our senses for pleasure.
The Exercise: The Five Senses Check-In
Think back to the things you loved doing before kids that you have completely stopped. Now, break that activity down into its sensory components and incorporate just one small piece.
| Sense | Activity Before | Small Re-Engagement |
|---|---|---|
| Smell | Loads of lit candles | Have special candles or essential oils in reach that you can grab and smell when you need to ground yourself. |
| Sound | Going to live concerts | Put on headphones and listen to one song, loudly, that you used to love, without doing anything else. Dance away! |
| Sight | Visiting museums/art | Spend two minutes focusing only on the details of a beautiful photograph or piece of art on your phone. Or even better, a physical photo on your wall or photo album. This blends two senses into one activity. |
| Taste | Enjoying fine dining | Buy one square of really good dark chocolate or a specialty tea and savour it slowly, focusing only on the flavour. |
| Touch | Sculpting/knitting | Work with play-dough or clay for five minutes, or actively feel the texture of a soft blanket or smooth stone. |
Rediscovering yourself is a journey, not a single destination. It starts with small, compassionate, intentional actions, but it can lead to monumental change. Sometimes, finding your true self again requires support and community to help you break free from old limitations.
If you are ready to move beyond small steps and dive into deep, transformative work to shed the old roles and step into your full power, we can help.
(Rebirth & Power services specifically for mothers ready to build a life that honours both their role as a parent and their identity as an individual.)
The journey back to yourself is the bravest one you will ever take. Be kind to the woman in the mirror; she has been waiting for you.
